There’s Always Money in the Banana Stand

RECIPE: Frozen Chocolate Covered Bananas

Recently my roommate came home with these:I love bananas.  After oranges, pears, and plums, bananas are my favorite fruit.  I also inherited a massive addiction to chocolate, thanks to my mom (although maybe the gene was watered down because I like milk chocolate, whereas she will eat the darkest chocolate you can find).  So when the roommate brought these home, I was pretty excited.  Then I realized that with a few ingredients and some self-control to not eat all the chocolate, I could make them.

So I did.

The first decision I made was that I needed toppings.  I decided on chopped nuts, coconut flakes, and kosher salt.  The first two sounded good and the salt sounded interesting, so I went for it.

I sliced the bananas in different sized pieces to see how each size freezes and which is best to eat.

It was my roommate’s day off, so I asked her to take photos while I cooked.  She had to take a photo of this banana sticker.  I went to the website, and “go bananas after dark” isn’t what you think…if you’re thinking that it’s some sort of creepy banana porn site.  Instead it’s some recipes for grilling bananas.  I think I prefer this over what I thought it could be.

The first few turned out quite well, but after that things got a bit chunky.  I think I should have added more olive oil at the beginning to keep the chocolate smooth.

Not so attractive, but still pretty delicious.  The salted ones turned out the prettiest, although those were the ones I did first, when the chocolate was hottest.

Rating: 3 of 5 glasses of wine.  Does wine go well with bananas?  I think next time I’d change up the kind of chocolate I use and experiment with some other toppings.  It’s a fun dessert during the summer, and maybe even a pretty easy treat for a baby/wedding shower.  I’d have to try some different things to really make up my mind for sure.

Mix chocolate chips with Wilton Melting Chocolate in 50-50 ratio to make the chocolate smoother and less clumpy. If you use a double boiler (just a smaller pot in a larger pot) you can keep the chocolate warm and it won’t clump before you can use it. Eating bananas with chocolate makes them seem at least halfway healthy!

When I saw the title of this post in my feed reader, somehow I knew it was your post. :-)

I’m going to make these soon. I’ve been missing going to the frozen banana stand in Balboa on occasion–despite my husband’s near deadly allergy to/mild dislike of bananas. Thanks!

I kind of thought you might like that. I miss Arrested Development something awful. A re-watch might be in order soon.

Extra points for referencing Arrested Development.

These are awesome, and so easy for a party/large group of people.

Thanks! I would definitely like to try making them again at some point. I guess that means I have to have a party or something…
