The Kids Are Gone; What Can You Possibly Expect From Me?

RECIPE: Strawberry Basil Martini

What are you doing here? Are you looking for food? There’s no food here now. The children are away at their grandma’s for a week. There’s been no cooking. I haven’t even poured myself a bowl of cereal in the four days they’ve been gone.

You can’t really be expecting me to whip up something gourmet when I’ve got 7 entire days where I’m not expected to sustain life in three small humans three times a day, right? I mean please, people, can’t I enjoy my freedom for just one week?

Oh, all right. Quit with the whining. I guess I can throw together a cocktail. I do love a good strawberry basil martini.

Let’s start with a strawberry rubbed, sugar rimmed glass…

And then some cut strawberries…

Throw in some fresh basil, a bit more sugar and some lime juice and muddle it into a pulpy, sweet mess…

Finish it off with vanilla vodka, some water and a whole bunch of ice…

Hm… not bad… but a little too much like a boozy salad. Next time I will throw it all in a shaker, strain it and serve it in a martini glass. Yeah, that’s the ticket.

But for this Fourth of July, it wasn’t too bad. And neither was a family dinner where I got to focus on being an aunt instead of being totally consumed by mommyhood.

Don’t worry, though, I’ll be happy to have the little monkeys back on Saturday. My heart needed just this bit of absence to grow fond of the day-to-day grind. I might make it through all of next week without my head exploding once.
