Pizza for the Masses

There may have been alcohol involved when Ryan and I sent out an Evite for a pizza party at our house.  See, we’re pretty darn proud of our pizzas on the grill, and we’ve had a few couples over in the last few months to try out new toppings on them.  But two extra people is not the same as…. 30.

The day before the party I had a mini breakdown.  How in the heck do you know how many toppings to buy for 14 pizzas?  And cheese!  That’s SO much cheese!  And is 14 pizzas even enough? And of course, each pizza takes 7 minutes to cook (one of the guests timed it), so what happens if all 30 people were there at once and were just standing around waiting for another pizza to come out?

So I decided to make a ton of appetizers.  We had spinach dip, my homemade hummus, veggies and dip, fruit and dip, cheese and crackers, layered bean dip, chips, M&Ms and I had two girlfriends bring desserts. I was smart and made all the appetizers and toppings the night before.  *pat on back*

OK, so I felt better that people wouldn’t starve while they waited for the pizzas come off the grill.  But of COURSE I would have 2 vegetarians, 2 lactose intolerants, and one non-red meat eater coming.  How was I going to deal with all that?!

Here’s all the toppings we had: mozzarella, pepperoni, caramelized onions, mushrooms, red peppers, buffalo chicken, blue cheese, feta, basil, spinach, tomatoes, refried beans, salsa, mexican cheese, pepperocinis, olives, ground beef, parmigiano-reggiano, sun dried tomatoes, fig, priscutto…  I may have forgotten a few…  Ok, fine, we went a tad overboard.

It took me a full 40 minutes to roll out all the dough for all the pizzas before the guests arrived.  But!  I had a few doughs unrolled, and my brother, who was an award winning pizza dough tosser (what does that trophy look like?) put on a little show for all the guests.

The verdict on favorite pizzas:  hands-down, the best was the buffalo chicken and blue cheese pizza.  Instead of sauce, I brushed the dough with garlic-infused olive oil and covered the whole thing with Mexican-blend cheese.  It was AMAZING.  And we’d never made it before!  The veggie pizza was a hit too.  We may have some veggie converts.  The loser: the Mexican pizza wasn’t quite right, but we’re determined to try that one again and perfect it. We had guests until 2am! (well, actually, they stayed in the guest room, but we were all still hanging out at 2am!)  Now THAT’S a party.

So, we had 30 people show up, including a gaggle of kids, and I don’t think a single stomach left hungry.  I’m rating this a 5 out of 5 high fives.  Which is totally what Ryan and I gave each other at the end of the night!  Want an invite to our next pizza party, because we’re ready to do another!

    Oh my goodness – I am really upset that we missed this… Sounds amazing and now I must try. I hope to someday get a slice from the chefs themselves :) soon lady!!! soon!!!
